A Tax Partner with Gunnip & Company for more than 15 years, Don is regularly in touch with his clients. “Coming up with ideas is just the first step, the more important step is convincing clients to implement those ideas,” he says. Don’s persistence usually pays off - proven by many long-lasting, satisfied clients.
Prior to joining the firm, Don worked with KPMG and was a Controller with Corporation Service Company. Don credits his experience outside of an accounting firm in allowing him to identify with his clients when interpreting data and explaining what the numbers mean to them and their business.
Some examples of how Don has helped his clients include:
- Initiating conversions from C Corporations to S Corporations allowing clients to take advantage of lower tax rates and eliminate the additional layer of taxation. Don has helped many clients save in excess of $30 million by making them aware of the opportunities available by making these conversions.
- Providing accurate valuations in order for clients to achieve significant tax savings. Don has structured gifting strategies based on these valuations for clients wanting to transfer wealth to future generations.
Don particularly values clients who set high standards for their business - they expect more from him and in turn have high standards for who they work with. “It all comes down to supporting them,” says Don. “Money and technology complicate things sometimes. What’s most important is maintaining the relationships we’ve built with our clients.”
When he’s not working, Don enjoys going to the gym and spending time with his family. One of his proudest accomplishments is resurrecting the baseball program at his son’s school, working with administration to get community sponsors for the team. A former shot put and discus thrower in high school himself, Don also helps coach young athletes in shot put techniques. Don is a member of the Salesianum Advancement Committee and the Finance Council for his church and lives in Delaware with his wife and two sons.
