A partner in the tax department, Valerie began her career in Wisconsin, working in public accounting and with one of the largest law firms in that area. Valerie has extensive experience in many areas of taxation including individuals, business, nonprofits and estates and trusts. “I still love the challenge of being presented with something I know little about and considering how to figure it out,” she says.
Valerie’s perspective is refreshing - she always considers how decisions will affect clients. She is an award-winning accountant, having received recognition for her ability to develop opportunities for both team members and clients. She was also recently selected as a Woman to Watch by the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants. Examples of Valerie’s success on behalf of her client’s include:
- Performing due diligence and planning for clients wishing to buy or sell their businesses. Examining deal structures and tax implications, Valerie educates clients on the pros and cons throughout the entire process.
- Reviewing past returns for new clients. Valerie has identified areas that were not reported properly and amended returns resulting in tax savings.
- Exploring planning options for deductions and credits based on new guidance or court cases.
- Working with clients to review the implications of FIN 48 and implement the appropriate compliance procedures.
Valerie has volunteered her time with a number of nonprofit organizations over the years and is an active speaker on various tax topics and new tax developments. She is passionate about Gunnip & Company being the premiere firm in town. Her vision involves establishing a firm-wide client-team concept and implementing the highest standards for clients. Always looking for different techniques that will benefit clients, Valerie creates trust with her no nonsense approach. “My job is to make their business profitable while paying the least amount of tax legally possible. The more tax you pay, the more profitable your business is, and if you aren’t paying more tax over time, you aren’t making more money which means I’m not doing my job. We all succeed together.”
Valerie lives in Delaware and enjoys spending time with her son. She also enjoys reading, working puzzles and running.
